The Mussel Float
The challenge was to develop a purpose built visually inert floatation system meeting the requirements of Mussel Farmers and satisfying their desire to reduce the perceived visual impact of brighter coloured barrels.
The final product, "The Mussel Float" was developed in Battleship Grey from High Density Molecular Polyethylene.
The Float is extrusion blow moulded using a newly designed mould to cater for the requirements of the industry.
It is 10 kilograms in weight and designed with rope holds top and bottom as illustrated and is suitable for vertical or horizontal floating as required by the different methods of growing and harvesting mussels.
Interior pressure is required to keep the float in shape whilst it is in the water and exposed to U. V. sunlight and sea elements. Therefore Gem designed a valve suitable for allowing the float to be air pressurised before and during sea use.
